Fluorescent Minerals of Bisbee, Arizona with Richard W. Graeme IV
Saturday, January 25, 2025, 11:00 am - MST

Fluorescent minerals are among the least studied aspects of Bisbee mineralogy. Even post-mining and radioactive minerals have been examined far more carefully from the locality. It took time to develop a more mature appreciation of these minerals. Fluorescent minerals had to compete with more interesting species such as azurite, malachite, and cuprite, as well as uranium minerals in which there was strong economic interest at the time. Presently, 340 distinct mineral species have been identified from Bisbee, and of these, only 15 are recognized as fluorescent. Graeme will look at the initial interest in Bisbee fluorescent minerals, examine the species known to fluoresce and look at future possibilities.

Richard W. Graeme IV was born in Bisbee, Arizona. By the age of six, he was collecting minerals underground with his father and twin brother. Minerals and mining were the focal points of his youth, with many hundreds of hours spent underground in Bisbee and other western mining areas collecting minerals and mining artifacts. In 1986, along with his twin, he collected what is surely Bisbee’s finest cuprite specimen along with exceptional examples of some of the rarest of copper minerals.

Rich has worked in mines in Alaska, Colorado, California, and New Mexico. Later, he worked in Bisbee at the Queen Mine Tours as a guide, where his knowledge base was put to full use. Because of the difficult times for the domestic mining industry, Rich switched from a mining major to education. He earned a degree in education from the University of Arizona in 1999. He has been teaching for 25 years in Southern Arizona. During this time Richard has authored and co-authored several books and articles including, “The Mineralogy of Bisbee, Arizona Volumes 1 and 2,” “7-Bells: Mine Accidents at Bisbee, Arizona,” and “Forgotten Caves of Bisbee, Arizona.”
